THE DECEMBERISTS

The Album
The Crane Wife

The Track
"O Valencia!"

The Label
Capitol Records

Portland, Oregon's "hyper-literate prog rock" band have taken their beloved indie darling status and whimsically run with it on The Crane Wife, their major label debut. NPR.org calls it "the most sonically ambitious album to date." Inspired by a Japanese folk tale - from a band who lifted their name from a 19th century Russian revolutionary movement -  The Crane Wife sports a catchy single, "O Valencia!," as did its 2005 predecessor, Picaresque (Kill Rock Stars) with "Sixteen Military Wives," initially aired on KEXP Seattle. If that signature pop sound is familiar, it should be; The Crane Wife is produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Tucker Martine (the Long Winters). The new album and single, featuring Helena, Montana native and obvious Morissey devotee Colin Meloy on vocals and acoustic guitar, has been heavily embraced by Triple A radio at nearly all of non-comm this fall, and now, well on the way to closing out the commercial side of  The Panel  as well as the band prepares to tour Europe. Laura Veirs duets with Meloy on track #3, "Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)". There are even traces of ELP and Jethro Tull on "The Island".
