Liner Notes
Drawing on a wide variety of influences from blues to gospel to country to 60's British Invasion on Howl, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has broken into new territory from their first two releases. The group has undergone some membership changes since their last album and has completely revamped their sound. The material on Howl explores all those genres with passion, respect and authority.
The radio single, "Ain't No Easy Way" opens with an insistent acoustic guitar that gives way to electric slide guitar, howling harmonica and pounding drums. T-Bone Burnett is credited with assistance in the production and it shows in the very rootsy sound throughout the 14 songs on Howl.
Clattering tambourine, bluesy slide guitar and lyrics about sin, loss, redemption, and salvation evoke themes of the great spiritual music from America's south in "Gospel Song" "Shuffle Your Feet" and "Devil's Waiting." There are fairly obvious nods to Bob Dylan on "Restless Sinner" and "Complicated Situation." And it's impossible not to hear echoes of John Lennon's Phil Spector-produced Imagine album on "Weight of the World" and "Sympathetic Noose," which uses a slap-back effect on the vocal and rhythm tracks. Howl has scanned over 41,000 since its release on August 23, 2005.
