FIONA APPLE
 The Album Extraordinary Machine
The Track "O' Sailor"
The Label Epic
Chronography Extraordinary Machine (Epic) 2005 When The Pawn... (Epic) 1999 Tidal (Epic) (1996)
Liner Notes "I certainly haven't been shopping for any new shoes - And- I certainly haven't been spreading myself around I still only travel by foot and by foot, it's a slow climb, but I'm good at being uncomfortable, so I can't stop changing all the time..." —"Extraordinary Machine"
For her long-awaited third release, Apple steps out beyond her loopy and neurotic image to create a compelling and complex record. Her voice remains sultry and lyrics stark, but there is a funkier feel to Extraordinary Machine courtesy of producer Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50 Cent) and co-producer Brian Kehew. It has been six years since her last album. On Letterman the other night she was asked what she has been doing in the interim. Apple chuckled and shrugged, "I don't know." Todd Rundgren once referred to it as "The Tortured Artist Effect." You see, as an artist, she has the prerogative to be fickle. And Apple has always run with it. She simply did not feel like writing songs for the longest time. Finally, in 2003, she started getting her groove back and recording tracks for a new record. There were leaks on the Internet and delays at the label. Hard-core fans even waged a public "Free Fiona" campaign against her label, claiming that Epic was unwilling to release the new album. In fact, the artist and label were simply busy getting it right. The final result of Extraordinary Machine features nine reworked tracks, two songs that kept their original form - the title track and "Waltz" - and a new song, "Parting Gift." "O' Sailor," the first single, like nearly every other song, deals with Apple's favorite theme, romantic relationships. Album highlights include the single, the title track and "Better Version of Me." The Extraordinary Machine DualDisc features live performances, a video for "Not About Love" and behind-the-scenes footage.

Press "Throughout, Apple's torch and torch-you songs now balance her precocious depth with a hard-won directness. Against all odds, Extraordinary Machine lives up to its title as a testimoney to its creator's resilience and flexibility." Rolling Stone
"The care, or contrivance, that went into the re-recording of most of this album – produced by Brian Kehew and by Mike Elizondo (50 Cent, Eminem), and with session players including the Roots' "?uestlove" – results in an odd but unignorable CD. Odd and unignorable, rather like Apple herself." —San Diego Union-Tribune
Retail Extraordinary Machine is now in stores as of October 4th.
