Liner Notes
Warm, sultry vocals wafting through cool alien landscapes. Layers of swirling guitar and piano and vocoder awash with samples, strings and curiously prodding drum machines. Welcome to the wide-eyed world of Imogen Heap, best known for her work in the British duo Frou Frou (
Details/2002) with producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Madonna). Although she claims to be "genre-less," the classically-trained singer-songwriter is rapidly carving a niche with
Speak For Yourself, the long-awaited solo follow-up to her eclectic 1998 debut album
I, Megaphone.
Speak For Yourself features the punchy electronic pop single "Goodnight And Go" (yes, that's actually veteran guitar god Jeff Beck on electric guitar!) We also like the trippy "Hide And Seek" and the record's opener, the accessible mid-tempo "Headlock". The disc was recorded in her own East London studio (I've been programming on macs since I was a teenager") where she used everything she could get her hands on to create new sounds, including kid's toys and trains passing outside the studio.
Among other cutting-edge stations around the country, KCRW Santa Monica-Los Angeles and Indie 103 Los Angeles led the initial charge for
Speak For Yourself where "Hide And Seek" pulled top phones at KCRW. And if it sounds like her music is maybe soundtrack-friendly, you guessed right. Imogen has had numerous requests for her songs from film and TV producers. She has cherry-picked the offers. "Hide And Seek" leaped from nowhere to #32 on
Billboard's Hot 100 Download chart after
The O.C. featured Imogen's "Hide And Seek" on its season 2 finale. "Goodnight And Go" was included on the soundtrack
Music From The O.C. Mix 4. Imogen also covers the Classics IV/Santana hit "Spooky" on the
Just Like Heaven soundtrack. "Holding Out For a Hero" appears on the
Shrek 2 soundtrack. Her biggest movie soundtrack exposure to date has been via her Frou Frou track, "Let Go," heard on the soundtrack to the hit film,
Garden State. TV and film music placement combined with hot press and Alternative/Hot AC crossover airplay is pushing the format's discovery to the brink of international breakout.

Press
"With her synthesizer she mesmerizes…Ms Heap delivered a rendition of 'Hide and Seek' that could have made a robot weep."
—
New York Times
"Heap dusts graceful, piquant vocals over atmospheric arrangements. The results, from the shimmering Headlock to the electro-cappella Hide and Seek, twinkle and beguile, proving less can leave you wanting more." 3 ½ stars
—
USA Today
"This former Frou Frou front-woman turns out to be a significant talent in her own right…. 'Speak for Yourself' is ballsier, and it shows vividly that Heap is not just a compelling vocalist from the Kate Bush school for the intensely intriguing. 3 Stars
